The teacher

A Mumbai musician who still plays

Sanket Survase has had a guitar in his hands since the age of five. At Sathaye College in Mumbai, where he earned his B.A., he was part of the college Music Association and played in a band that performed at colleges across the city.

He has been teaching since 2010 — over 13 years — and in that time more than 4000 students have learned with him. Some arrived nervous, never having held a guitar; others wanted to finally play the songs they grew up singing. Children, working adults and grandparents alike, he has guided all of them from their very first chord to playing music they care about.

He still performs live himself. That matters in a teacher: the rhythm, the feel and the small habits he passes on are the same ones he uses on stage. Lessons run in English, Hindi or Marathi — whichever feels most natural to you.

The curriculum

What you'll actually learn

No filler. Every class moves you toward playing songs you recognise, with the technique to keep getting better on your own. Absolute beginners are genuinely welcome.

01

Your first chords

Open chords and clean finger placement, so your very first strums sound like music — then moving between chords smoothly.

02

Strumming & rhythm

Timing, strumming patterns and a steady sense of rhythm — the foundation that makes everything else fall into place.

03

The songs you want

We learn the songs you actually care about, from Rock & Roll favourites to Bollywood film numbers and whatever's on your list.

04

Acoustic & electric

Lessons on both acoustic and electric guitar, so you can follow the sound and style you love — and feel what changes between them.

05

Fingerstyle & melody

Move beyond chords into picking individual notes and playing melodies, for a softer, fuller sound once you're ready.

06

Basic music theory

Just enough theory to understand what you're playing and why — explained simply, without jargon.

07

Ear training

Learning to listen, so you can start recognising chords by sound and figure out songs on your own over time.

08

Playing & singing

Hold a rhythm while you sing, and build the confidence to play for family, friends — or a small audience.

Make it yours

Which song do you want to play?

Pick one (or type your own). Sanket will build your lessons around the music you actually love — and you'll be playing it sooner than you think.

Good to know

Questions, answered honestly

Do I need my own guitar?

Yes — students should have their own guitar to learn and practise on between lessons. If you don't have one yet, message Sanket before you start and he's happy to advise on a sensible first acoustic or electric guitar.

I've never played before. Is that okay?

Absolutely. Most students start as complete beginners. Lessons begin from the very basics, at your own pace, with plenty of patience along the way.

Which ages do you teach?

All ages — from young children under 10 to teenagers, young adults and grown-ups. Over the years Sanket has taught students from age 6 right up to 60, with the pace set to suit each person.

Where do the lessons happen? Can I learn online?

Your choice: at your home in Mumbai, at the tutor's home (Airport / Andheri area), or online via Zoom from anywhere. Online lessons follow the same curriculum as in-person.

Acoustic or electric guitar?

Both. Sanket teaches acoustic and electric guitar, including the techniques specific to each, so you can learn on the instrument you're drawn to and switch as your interest grows.

How soon will I play a song?

It depends on your practice, but lessons are built around playing real music early. Once your first chords and strumming come together, you'll start working on songs you actually want to play — Rock & Roll and Bollywood included.

Individual or group classes?

Either. Take one-on-one lessons for full personal attention, or join a small group to learn alongside family or friends. Each class runs one hour, weekly.

What languages are lessons taught in?

English, Hindi or Marathi — whichever is most comfortable for you.

Let's begin

Your first song is closer than you think

Tell Sanket a little about yourself — your age, whether it's for you or your child, acoustic or electric, and how you'd like to learn (at home or online across Mumbai). He'll take it from there.

Booking opens Sanket's Facebook page until his WhatsApp number is added.
